Bullet journalling for beginners: how to start simply and stick with it

Bullet journalling attracts beginners with beautiful Instagram spreads and loses them in the first week. Here is how to start with the system, not the aesthetic.

The core system — not the spreads

The bullet journal was created by Ryder Carroll as a rapid logging system: bullets (tasks), dashes (notes), circles (events). An index at the front. A future log for distant dates. Monthly and daily logs. That is the entire system. Everything else — the decorative spreads, the colour-coded trackers — is personal addition, not the method.

Start with two collections

Open a new notebook. Write an index page. Then create a future log (a two-page spread showing 6 months with space for events and appointments). Then start your first monthly log. Begin a daily log each morning: date, three bullets maximum. That is it. Add complexity only when the simple version has worked for a month.

Paper matters

Dot grid paper (5mm) is the most versatile for bullet journalling — it guides without constraining. Use our free dot grid paper template to practise layouts before committing them to a notebook. A dedicated dot grid notebook is worth investing in once the system sticks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a special notebook?
No — you can bullet journal in any notebook. Dot grid works best. Leuchtturm1917 A5 and Moleskine are the most popular dedicated options. Start cheaply until the habit is established.
How long does a bullet journal session take?
The daily log: 5 minutes in the morning. The weekly review: 15–20 minutes. Monthly setup: 30 minutes. The system is designed to be fast — if it is taking longer, it is being over-decorated.
