Fireworks safety — the non-negotiables
Buy from a reputable supplier. Read the instructions fully before the event. Never return to a firework that has been lit. Keep a bucket of water. Keep spectators at least 25 metres from fireworks. Sparklers: one at a time, never for children under 5, hold at arm's length, plunge into water when finished — a used sparkler is as hot as a welding iron for several minutes.
The food that makes Bonfire Night
Jacket potatoes in foil on the bonfire or in the oven. Hot dogs. Toffee apples (make them the day before). Yorkshire parkin (a sticky gingerbread cake traditional to the North). Hot chocolate with marshmallows. Mulled apple juice or cider for the adults. The food is as important as the fireworks — use our free Bonfire Night menu sign to display the offerings.
The legal rules
Home fireworks in England can be set off until 11pm on most evenings, midnight on 5th November. Maximum sound level is 120dB for 'garden' category fireworks. Category 2 and Category 3 fireworks are both legal for private use — check the label. Never set off fireworks drunk.
