The right questions
Not 'did I achieve my goals?' (demoralising if the answer is no) but: what mattered most this year? What do I know now that I didn't a year ago? What drained me that I should do less of? What energised me that I should do more of? What am I proud of that no-one else would notice? These questions surface genuine insight regardless of whether formal goals were met. Use our free year in review sheet to structure the process.
The eight life areas
Rate satisfaction (1–10) in: health and energy, relationships, work and career, finances, personal growth, fun and recreation, home environment, and purpose and meaning. This is the wheel of life exercise, and identifying the two lowest-scoring areas is more useful than setting goals in areas that are already functioning well. Where is the gap between what you have and what you want?
From review to intention
The transition from review to goals is not about willpower. It is about system design: identifying the specific behaviours, triggers and environments that will produce different outcomes. If last year's intention to exercise more failed, the question isn't 'how do I want it more?' — it is 'what needs to change about my environment or schedule to make it the default?' Use our free resolutions planner to write each intention with a trigger and a plan.
