Word of the year explained — how the practice works

The word of the year is a single word chosen to guide intention, focus and decision-making for the twelve months ahead. It serves as an alternative to resolutions.

Why a word instead of a resolution?

Resolutions are usually goals (stop doing X, start doing Y). They tend to be binary — succeeded or failed by February. A word is expansive rather than restrictive. 'Courage' can show up in a difficult conversation, a creative risk, a health decision, or a new friendship. It fits the unpredictable nature of a year better than a specific target.

How to choose yours

List 5–10 words that feel relevant. Sit with them for a few days. The right word tends to keep returning or feel slightly uncomfortable — both are good signs. Use our free word of the year worksheet to work through the choice.

Keeping it alive

Write it somewhere you see it daily. Return to it when making decisions. Review at mid-year and year-end — does it still fit, or has a new word emerged?
