The driving theory test explained — format, scoring and tips

The UK driving theory test has two parts: multiple choice and hazard perception.

Multiple choice

50 questions drawn from a bank of around 800. You need 43/50 to pass. Questions cover the Highway Code, road signs, vehicle safety, and driving behaviour. 57 minutes allowed.

Hazard perception

14 video clips showing real driving situations. You click when you spot a developing hazard. 13 clips have one scoring hazard; one has two. Maximum score 75 (5 per hazard). Pass mark: 44/75. You must pass both parts on the same sitting.

Tips for passing

• Use the official DVSA practice materials — the question bank is finite and practiseable.
• For hazard perception: click as soon as you see a potential hazard developing, not when it becomes obvious. Clicking frantically to game the test is detected and scored zero.
• Read the Highway Code fully. Not just the questions — the whole document.
