The anniversary gift tradition is the long-standing custom of associating each wedding anniversary with a particular material, theme or symbol — a ready-made source of inspiration for choosing a thoughtful, fitting gift to mark each year of marriage.
The themes start small and grow more precious with the years, reflecting a marriage's increasing strength and value. Well-known milestones include paper (1st), wood (5th), tin (10th), crystal (15th), china (20th), silver (25th), pearl (30th), ruby (40th), gold (50th) and diamond (60th).
As well as the traditional list there's a more modern version, which assigns different (often contemporary) gifts to each year, and the exact themes can vary between sources and countries. So there's no single 'official' list — treat them all as inspiration rather than rules.
