Rangoli is a traditional Indian art form of creating colourful, decorative patterns on the floor — usually at the entrance of a home — especially during Diwali and other festivals and celebrations. The intricate designs are a beautiful and meaningful part of the festivities.
Rangoli is much more than decoration. The patterns are traditionally created to welcome guests and deities into the home, to bring good luck and prosperity, and as an expression of joy and celebration. At Diwali, the Festival of Lights, rangoli (often alongside rows of diyas) helps welcome the goddess Lakshmi and good fortune into the home.
Rangoli is traditionally made by hand using materials like coloured powders, rice, flour, coloured sand, flower petals and sometimes diyas. Designs range from simple geometric shapes and flowers to wonderfully intricate, symmetrical patterns, often featuring motifs like lotus flowers, peacocks, and geometric and natural forms. Creating it is often a shared family activity.
