Ramadan explained — the holy month of fasting

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting, prayer, reflection and community.

The fast

Muslims fast from dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib) throughout Ramadan. The pre-dawn meal is called Suhoor; the meal to break the fast at sunset is Iftar. The fast involves abstaining from food, drink, smoking and negative behaviour — not just eating.

More than fasting

Ramadan is a month of increased prayer (including Tarawih — special night prayers), reading the Quran, giving to charity (Zakat and Sadaqah), and community. Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power), in the last 10 nights, is considered the holiest night of the year.

Eid Al-Fitr

Ramadan ends with Eid Al-Fitr — a three-day celebration marking the breaking of the fast, beginning with communal prayers, then family gatherings, gifts and feasting.
