Bodyweight training (sometimes called calisthenics) means building strength and fitness using your own body as the resistance — exercises like squats, lunges, press-ups, rows, planks and glute bridges — with little or no equipment. It's one of the most accessible ways to get stronger, since you can do it almost anywhere for free.
The challenge with bodyweight training is that you can't simply add heavier weights, so you progress in other ways: more reps and sets, slower and more controlled movements, harder variations of each exercise (for example progressing from knee or wall press-ups toward full ones), shorter rest periods, and eventually adding resistance bands or weight. This keeps the principle of progressive overload going so you keep getting stronger.
Build a simple balanced routine, prioritise good form, warm up, and progress gradually. Our free home workout plan and home strength training guide show you how. If you're new to exercise or have any health concerns, check with your GP first.
