Postnatal depression — the difference from baby blues and how to get help

Postnatal depression (PND) affects approximately 1 in 10 mothers and 1 in 25 fathers in the UK. It is a recognised medical condition that responds well to treatment.

Baby blues vs PND

Baby blues: tearfulness, mood swings and anxiety in days 3–10 after birth, experienced by around 80% of mothers. Caused by hormonal shifts; passes within 2 weeks without treatment. Postnatal depression: persists beyond 2 weeks; significantly affects daily functioning, bonding, and the ability to care for yourself or the baby.

Getting help

Speak to your GP or health visitor. PND responds well to therapy (particularly CBT), medication, or both. You are not failing as a parent. Seeking support early leads to faster recovery. PANDAS Foundation (pandasfoundation.org.uk) provides peer support. If you are in crisis, contact NHS 111 or the Samaritans (116 123, free, 24 hours).
