Perimenopause explained — symptoms, timeline and support

Perimenopause is the hormonal transition leading to menopause, typically beginning in the mid-40s and lasting 4–8 years.

Symptoms

The most recognised: hot flushes, night sweats, irregular periods, and sleep disruption. Less recognised but common: brain fog, low mood, anxiety, joint pain, palpitations, bladder changes, dry skin, and changes in libido. Many women experience a cluster of these symptoms years before their periods become irregular.

Timeline

What helps

HRT is the most evidence-backed treatment for moderate to severe symptoms. Lifestyle changes (exercise, reducing alcohol, improving sleep) also reduce symptom severity. Track your symptoms with our free perimenopause tracker before your GP appointment.
