A no-spend challenge is a defined period — usually a week, weekend or month — where you commit to buying only essential items.
Most people allow: bills, groceries, and essential transport. Everything else — eating out, takeaways, new clothes, online shopping, subscriptions (except essential ones), coffee shops — is off limits for the duration.
A no-spend month does two things: it saves money directly (typically £200–500 for a month), and it resets habitual spending patterns. Most people discover during a no-spend period that a significant proportion of their spending is automatic rather than chosen — subscriptions they forgot, coffees they did not enjoy, online purchases they did not need.
The 'last hurrah' before the challenge starts — anticipatory spending that defeats the purpose. Displacement spending — finding ways around the rules. Boredom-driven spending — have a list of free activities ready.
