Microchipping is mandatory for all dogs in England, Wales and Scotland from 8 weeks of age. The microchip is a small electronic chip (the size of a grain of rice) injected under the skin at the scruff of the neck and carries a unique 15-digit number.
All dogs must be microchipped and registered on a government-approved database before 8 weeks old. The responsibility lies with the breeder. When ownership changes, the new owner must update the database registration. Failure to microchip a dog can result in a fine of up to £500.
A microchipped and registered dog can be reunited with its owner if it strays or is stolen. Dog wardens and rescue centres routinely scan all stray dogs. The chip only works if the registration details are current — update your address on the database every time you move.
