How to manage multiple medications at home safely

Managing multiple medications safely is about systems and consistency. Here are the approaches that work.

Use a pill organiser

Fill a weekly pill organiser every Sunday for the week ahead. The visual confirmation of whether a dose has been taken is the most effective way to prevent missed or double doses.

Keep a written record

A medication log records name, dose, timing, prescribing doctor and any notes. Update it whenever a prescription changes. Bring a printed copy to all GP and hospital appointments — it saves significant time.

Set alarms for critical timing

For medications with strict timing (some antibiotics, warfarin, thyroid medication), phone alarms are more reliable than memory. Name the alarm with the medication name rather than a generic 'alarm'.

Store correctly

Most medications store best in a cool, dry place away from direct light — the kitchen and bathroom (too humid) are actually poor choices. A bedroom drawer or dedicated medicine cabinet is better.
