Habit stacking is a behaviour change strategy developed by James Clear (Atomic Habits) that links a new desired behaviour to an existing established habit. The formula is: 'After I [CURRENT HABIT], I will [NEW HABIT].'
The existing habit acts as a trigger for the new one, eliminating the need for a separate decision or reminder. The new behaviour is 'stacked' onto a routine that already reliably occurs. This leverages the existing neural pathway of the current habit rather than building a new one from scratch.
The anchor habit must be highly reliable (you do it every day without fail). The new habit should be small and immediately achievable — the goal is automatic performance, not an impressive new behaviour. Use our free monthly habit tracker to monitor the chain.
