A guide-parent (sometimes called a 'supporting adult', 'mentor' or simply a non-religious godparent) is a special person chosen by parents at a naming ceremony to play a meaningful role in their child's life — the secular equivalent of a godparent.
The roles are very similar — a trusted adult who commits to supporting, guiding and being there for the child as they grow — but the key difference is religious context. A godparent is appointed at a religious ceremony (like a christening or baptism) and traditionally has a role in the child's spiritual and religious upbringing. A guide-parent is chosen at a non-religious naming ceremony, with the focus purely on the personal relationship and support, without the religious dimension.
Like a godparent, the role of a guide-parent is an honour and a personal commitment rather than a legal one — it doesn't confer legal guardianship (that's a separate legal matter parents arrange independently).
