Executive function is an umbrella term for the cognitive processes that allow us to plan, organise, initiate, monitor and complete goal-directed behaviour. The prefrontal cortex of the brain is primarily responsible for executive function.
ADHD is increasingly understood as a disorder of executive function rather than simply attention. Individuals with ADHD typically have intact intellectual ability but significant difficulties with initiation, working memory and emotional regulation. This disconnect between capability and performance is one of the most frustrating aspects of ADHD.
