EPQ explained — the Extended Project Qualification

The EPQ (Extended Project Qualification) is a standalone qualification, taken by many UK students alongside A-levels (typically in Year 12 or 13), in which the student researches and produces an extended piece of independent work on a topic of their choice.

What it involves

Students choose their own question or project, then plan, research and produce either a 5,000-word essay (a 'dissertation') or an 'artefact' (such as a product, performance or event) with a shorter written report. Throughout, they keep a production log and deliver a presentation. It's worth up to half an A-level in UCAS points and is graded A* to E.
