A celebration of life is a gathering held to honour someone who has died, with the emphasis on celebrating who they were and the life they lived, rather than focusing on mourning their death. It's an increasingly popular alternative or addition to a traditional funeral.
A traditional funeral is usually a more formal, often religious ceremony held soon after death, frequently with the body present. A celebration of life tends to be less formal, more personal, and focused on joy and remembrance — sharing stories, photos, music the person loved, and the things that made them them. It can be held instead of, or as well as, a funeral, and often takes place a little later, giving families time to plan something meaningful.
There are no fixed rules — the whole point is to reflect the individual, so families can shape it however feels right. Our free celebration of life planner helps you organise one, and a memory jar lets guests share memories.
