A capsule wardrobe is a small, carefully chosen collection of clothes that are all interchangeable, all fit well, and are all worn regularly. The concept was coined by London boutique owner Susie Faux in the 1970s and popularised by Donna Karan in the 1980s.
Every item in the wardrobe should work with most other items. A navy trouser should pair with every top; a white shirt should work with every bottom. This interchangeability multiplies the number of outfits from a small number of pieces — 30 items that all combine creates hundreds of possible outfits.
