ADHD in adults — symptoms, diagnosis and managing daily life

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in adults presents differently from childhood ADHD and is frequently underdiagnosed, particularly in women.

Adult ADHD symptoms

• Difficulty sustaining attention on non-stimulating tasks
• Hyperfocus on engaging activities (the opposite extreme)
• Time blindness — difficulty sensing time passing
• Disorganisation and losing things
• Impulsivity (decisions, spending, interrupting)
• Emotional dysregulation
• Difficulty starting tasks (task initiation)

Getting a diagnosis

Refer yourself (or ask GP for referral) to an adult ADHD service. NHS waiting times are typically 2–5 years; private assessment is available faster but costs £500–1,000. A diagnosis changes access to support, medication and workplace adjustments.
