Active learning explained — engagement beats passive reception

Active learning is an instructional approach that requires learners to actively engage with the material — through discussion, problem-solving, practice, or creation — rather than passively receiving information.

Active vs passive learning

Passive learning: lectures, reading, watching videos. The learner receives information but doesn't process it deeply. Active learning: answering questions, solving problems, teaching back, creating summaries, applying concepts. The learner processes information, connects it to prior knowledge and strengthens retention.

The most effective active learning techniques

• Think-Pair-Share: think about a problem, discuss with a partner, share with the class
• The Muddiest Point: at the end of a lesson, identify the least-clear concept
• Concept mapping: draw connections between ideas
• Peer teaching: explain a concept to someone else (the Feynman Technique)
