Frequently asked questions

Can a total beginner train to run 5K?
Yes — going from no running at all to completing a 5K is one of the most achievable fitness goals there is, and huge numbers of people do exactly that every year, often surprising themselves. The secret is a gradual, structured build using walk/run intervals: you start by alternating short jogs with walking, then progressively jog more and walk less over the weeks until you're running continuously. This eases your body into it, builds fitness safely, and avoids the injury and discouragement that come from trying to run too far too soon. Most beginner plans get you there in around eight to nine weeks of running three times a week, with rest days in between (rest is when your body adapts and gets stronger, so it's part of the training, not skiving). Crucial beginner tips: go slowly — your pace should be easy enough to hold a conversation, as it's about building endurance, not speed; the goal is simply to finish, not to be fast; and consistency matters more than intensity. Ticking off each session is motivating and shows your progress. A couch-to-5K style plan is brilliantly beginner-friendly. As always, if you have any health concerns or haven't exercised in a while, it's worth checking with your GP before starting, and stop if you feel unwell or in pain (beyond normal exertion).
