Frequently asked questions
What is a payday or zero-based budget?
It's a method where, each payday, you assign every pound of income to a specific job — bills, savings, debt, sinking funds and spending — until income minus all your allocations equals zero. 'Zero' doesn't mean spending everything; savings and debt payments are jobs too. Doing it on payday, and moving savings across straight away ('pay yourself first'), means the money is allocated before it can quietly disappear. It takes a few months to settle into realistic numbers, so don't be discouraged early on. This is general information, not financial advice; free, impartial help is available from MoneyHelper, and if debt is a worry, from StepChange (0800 138 1111) or National Debtline (0808 808 4000).
