Sparklers are a magical part of Bonfire Night, but they burn extremely hot and cause many injuries each year, so safety has to come first — and a few simple rules make all the difference. The key guidance (in line with UK fire-safety advice): always supervise children closely with sparklers, and never give them to children under five, who are too young to use them safely. Everyone should wear gloves and hold sparklers at arm's length, away from their face, body, clothing and other people, and only light one sparkler at a time per person. Crucially, used sparklers stay dangerously hot long after they've gone out, so have a bucket of water or sand ready and drop spent sparklers straight in — never leave them lying around or hand a 'finished' one to a child. Once these safety basics are firmly in place, sparklers are wonderful for making memories: you can write your name or a word in the air, draw shapes like hearts, or spell out the year, and capturing it with a phone's night or long-exposure mode (steadying the camera on a wall or small tripod) creates gorgeous light-trail photos.
